Punjab: teacher transfer marriage policy update supports women teachers

In a landmark move, the School Education Department of Punjab has introduced a significant update under the teacher transfer marriage policy, aimed at supporting female teachers facing relocation challenges after marriage. The revised policy, announced on May 9, 2025, ensures that women educators can remain close to their families while continuing their professional journey.

Under the new e-Transfer Policy 2024, married female teachers can now apply for a one-time transfer to the district of their spouse’s residence or workplace at any point in their service. The previous system, which limited transfers to specific windows and imposed strict conditions, has been reformed to reflect empathy and practicality. The teacher transfer marriage policy has now been formally added under the “hardship” category — a progressive step that acknowledges family integration as a valid concern.

The policy also outlines clear procedural steps to facilitate inter-district or inter-division transfers. If a female teacher wishes to move to another division, the current district’s education office must secure a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the receiving district. This ensures coordination and transparency across administrative boundaries.

The revised policy further refines the order of priority in hardship-based transfer cases. The ranked categories now include:

  • Divorced, widowed, or separated women

  • Differently abled teachers

  • Teachers with critical medical conditions

  • Widowhood

  • Single parents

  • Female teachers applying under the teacher transfer marriage policy

Education officials have hailed the update as a compassionate, rights-based approach to improve staff welfare and teacher retention, particularly among women. Moreover, transfers under this category will now be open throughout the year, providing unprecedented flexibility.
