In a landmark development, Punjab University’s Department of Archaeology has partnered with the Institute of Archaeology Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) to foster PU-China archaeological collaboration and explore historical connections between two of the world’s ancient civilizations: the Indus Valley Civilization and Chinese Civilization. The collaboration is set to focus on tracing and documenting these historical linkages, which have been vital to the PU-China archaeological collaboration within the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the One Belt One Road initiative.
The PU-China archaeological collaboration was formalized during a memorandum of understanding (MoU) signing ceremony at the Punjab University Vice Chancellor’s office. Key attendees included PU VC Prof Dr M Ali, Dr Tong Tao, Dr Li Xinchen, and several other esteemed researchers from the Institute of Archaeology, CASS, as well as PU’s faculty, including Chairman of the Department of Archaeology Dr M Hameed and Director External Linkages Dr Yaamina Salman. The agreement marks a major step in creating joint research projects that will promote scholarly exchanges and deepen bilateral ties between the two countries through archaeology.
The primary focus of this partnership will involve the systematic exploration and excavation of potential archaeological sites, with an emphasis on uncovering and preserving cultural heritage. Both institutions will work closely on conservation efforts aimed at protecting valuable historical sites. As part of this initiative, researchers aim to build a comprehensive understanding of the historical connections between the civilizations, while ensuring that their findings contribute to preserving the cultural significance of these ancient regions. The PU-China archaeological collaboration also aims to advance scientific research methods in archaeology, setting the stage for further cooperation and discovery.
