Workshop on ‘Global Citizenship in Education’ Begins in Punjab

An international workshop focusing on global citizenship education in Punjab and its integration into school curricula kicked off on Monday. Jointly organised by the School Education Department (SED) and the Punjab Education, Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA), the workshop titled “Global Citizenship in Education and Curriculum Development and Integration” is being hailed as a pioneering initiative. The aim is to embed global citizenship education in Punjab across teaching and curriculum structures to align with international pedagogical standards. Officials said the effort is a concrete step to promote global citizenship education in Punjab at grassroots levels.

During the inaugural session, CEO PECTAA Dr Shehanshah Faisal Azeem and Parliamentary Secretary for Education Nosheen Adnan emphasized the necessity of developing a unified platform that links teacher training, assessment, and curriculum around 21st-century competencies. Dr Azeem reiterated that global citizenship education in Punjab is not just a policy goal but a strategic imperative. He further elaborated on integrating global citizenship education in Punjab with research-based and inclusive learning strategies. Nosheen Adnan linked the initiative to the Chief Minister’s progressive vision, asserting that global citizenship education in Punjab will foster sustainability, peace, and social equity.

The international dimension of the workshop was underlined by the presence of Jiyoung Min Om, Deputy Head of the Institute for Global Citizenship Education, who lauded Punjab’s commitment to global citizenship education in Punjab. Day one featured dynamic training sessions by global experts such as Prof Esther Care, Lia Espallardo, and Prof Kevin Kester, focusing on how to practically incorporate global citizenship education in Punjab into the national curriculum. These expert-led discussions reinforced the view that global citizenship education in Punjab can empower teachers and transform classrooms into agents of global responsibility.

As the workshop continues, upcoming sessions will emphasize modern teaching tools and inclusive pedagogies.
