“Our Chevening alumni from Pakistan have become leaders in government, industry, and elsewhere. I met inspirational former Chevening scholars in Karachi tonight,” he tweeted Monday night.

Chevening is the UK government’s international scholarships programme. It offers awards to students across the globe to study in the UK for a year on a fully-funded master’s degree.

The deadline for 2021-22 Chevening Scholarship Pakistan applications is November 2. If you’re interested in applying, here are the eligibility criteria:

  • An undergraduate degree
  • Two years of work experience
  • Unconditional offer from one UK university.

British passport holders, British citizens, or applicants who have studied in the UK with funding from the government won’t be able to apply for the programme.

How one scholar described her experience

Razeshta Sethna, a journalist, told local news tv channel about her experience as a Chevening scholar. She went on to study at SOAS for an MSc in Violence, Conflict, and Development. “It is one of the best/ranked programs for development practices globally so was focused, challenging and opened avenues in work for me such as academia and policy,” she said. “Apply, think about what interests you and how that would help you contribute to your profession or even if you want to explore a completely new area of interest.”

Sethna went on to say that a postgraduate program is “intense but gratifying.” “You’ll share your expertise and what you bring to that course with others and learn from them,” she said. “My program, for example, had academics who were development professionals and journalists so I could relate to their experiences and ideas. It gives you opportunities you’d never think you’d get especially as higher education has a price tag to it in the developed global north.”

Chevening has over 50,000 alumni across the globe from diverse backgrounds. Every year hundreds of students from Pakistan apply for the Chevening Scholarship Pakistan. Last year, 42 Pakistani scholars were selected and sent to the UK. Of these, 60% were women.
