Khan Academy Pakistan (KAP) was officially launched at a ceremony held in Karachi, introducing an artificial intelligence-powered online tutor named ‘Khanmigo‘ aimed at transforming education in the country. The initiative, described as a landmark moment for the nation’s education sector, seeks to tackle key challenges such as high dropout rates and inadequate infrastructure by offering innovative solutions and world-class content tailored to Pakistan’s needs.

Speaking at the event, Zeeshan Hasan, CEO of KAP, said the initiative represents a new era of innovation in education. “Today is a very important day. From here, a new era of innovation in education begins, offering world-class content,” he remarked. Hasan explained that KAP aims to deliver inclusive and accessible education by partnering with both private and public schools, offering resources aligned with the national curriculum in Urdu and regional languages, and empowering teachers through training and tools.

The organization plans to launch a pilot program in early 2025, focusing initially on equipping teachers with technology tools and gradually expanding to students. Hasan emphasized the importance of Khanmigo, an AI-powered tutor designed to enhance personalized learning for students and assist teachers with lesson planning and classroom management. “We aim to address challenges in the education sector using technology to provide world-class education,” he said.

Osman Rashid, Chairperson of KAP, described the project as a commitment to the future of Pakistan. “By integrating AI and localized content, we aim to transform the educational landscape of Pakistan, ensuring that every child, regardless of their circumstances, has access to quality learning,” Rashid said. He highlighted the potential of Khanmigo to support teachers and students across diverse educational settings, making learning more efficient and effective.

In a video message, Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, shared his vision of leveraging artificial intelligence to unlock the potential of Pakistan’s youth. “With Khan Academy Pakistan, we are bringing the power of AI to tackle the unique challenges faced by students and teachers. Together, we can help unlock the incredible potential of Pakistan’s youth and inspire a brighter future for all,” he said.

Qandeel, representing Khan Academy, spoke about the organization’s journey, starting from its inception in 2008 in California, where Sal Khan began teaching his cousins through YouTube videos. She highlighted the global impact of the non-profit, which now provides free educational resources to over 100 million learners annually in more than 50 languages. She added that Khanmigo represents a significant advancement in educational technology, acting as both a tutor for students and a support tool for teachers.

KAP has partnered with organizations such as AKHUWAT, TCF, Aga Khan University – Institute of Education Development, Nasra School, and CARE Foundation for its rollout. The initiative is backed by a collective of Pakistani diaspora and local business leaders, including board members Osman Rashid, Naeem Zamindar, Amin Hashwani, Mir Ibrahim Rahman, Rehan Jalil, Mubarak Imam, and Bilal Musharraf.

The launch event underscored KAP’s mission to provide equitable education and empower Pakistan’s teachers and students with cutting-edge resources. By integrating Khanmigo into classrooms and homes, KAP aims to reshape the educational landscape and address Pakistan’s longstanding challenges in the sector.
