Farah Gul Rahuja, a graduate of bioinformatics from Comsats University Islamabad, has earned global recognition as a Global Youth Leader at the prestigious 2024 World Internet Conference (WIC) Wuzhen Summit, held in China from November 19 to 22.
This year’s World Internet Conference (WIC) summit, themed “Embracing a Digital Future That Puts People First and Promotes Intelligent Goodness – Jointly Building a Cyberspace Community with a Shared Future,” brought together participants from over 130 countries and regions. The event spotlighted advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), with Rahuja standing out as one of 18 exceptional young leaders representing 17 nations, including Brazil, the United Kingdom, Egypt, and China. The selection process for these leaders was highly competitive, drawing applications from 61 countries across six continents.
“I am deeply honored to be recognized alongside such brilliant minds from around the globe,” said Rahuja. “This acknowledgment reflects the relentless efforts of my team and me to leverage AI and machine learning to drive positive change.”
A native of Dadu in Sindh province, Rahuja has dedicated more than four years to pioneering AI and machine learning initiatives. Among her most notable achievements is the development of PakGPT, an innovative chatbot designed to bridge the digital divide in Pakistan.
“PakGPT is more than just a technological solution—it’s a lifeline for individuals in remote and underserved areas,” explained Rahuja. “Pakistan’s rural regions often face limited internet connectivity, with many relying on outdated 2G networks. PakGPT was designed to function seamlessly on low-bandwidth connections, ensuring that even the most isolated communities have access to critical information and learning opportunities.”
What sets PakGPT apart is its ability to communicate in local languages, empowering users who might otherwise be excluded due to language barriers. Rahuja worked closely with community members and local leaders in her hometown to tailor the chatbot’s functionality to address the unique challenges faced by residents.
“PakGPT is a testament to how technology can be a force for inclusivity and empowerment,” she added. “From enhancing digital literacy to creating opportunities for skill development, our work is about transforming lives, one connection at a time.”
Farah Gul Rahuja’s recognition at WIC 2024 is a proud moment for Pakistan, showcasing the potential of its youth to lead the charge in technological innovation and social impact on the global stage.
