The Air Quality Index

Smog blankets Punjab, forcing schools to shut down until Nov 24.

Smog Forces Extended Shutdown

This decision comes as Punjab continues to grapple with hazardous air quality levels (The Air Quality Index). Initially, schools were scheduled to reopen on November 17, but the persistent smog prompted authorities to extend the closure for an additional week.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Lahore has soared to alarming levels, reaching a record 1600, making it one of the most polluted cities globally. The thick layer of smog has severely reduced visibility and poses significant health risks, particularly for children.

Punjab Extends Educational Institutions’ Closure Until November 24 Due to Severe Smog

In response to the worsening smog crisis, the Punjab government has extended the closure of all educational institutions, including public and private schools and tuition centers, until November 24, 2024.

Official Notification Issued

The Punjab School Education Department issued a notification on Friday, stating that all educational institutions, including tuition centers up to Higher Secondary Level (Grade 12), will remain closed. The directive excludes institutions within the territorial jurisdiction of District Murree. The notification also emphasized that institutions should shift to online learning systems wherever feasible.

Impact of Smog Across Punjab

Several cities across Punjab remain engulfed in a thick haze, with Lahore consistently ranking as the most polluted city in the world. The situation has also led to a health emergency being declared in Multan and Lahore, as hospitals report an increase in respiratory issues and other pollution-related illnesses.

Government Measures Under Fire

To combat the crisis, the Punjab government has intensified efforts to curb activities contributing to air pollution. These measures include sealing shops, restaurants, and wedding halls, enforcing early market closures at 8 p.m., and cracking down on industrial emissions.

However, critics remain unconvinced. Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider criticized the provincial government’s approach, calling it inadequate to address the smog emergency. He urged authorities to declare an immediate smog emergency across the province and implement more robust measures to tackle the crisis.

A Call for Urgent Action

With smog choking cities and impacting daily life, experts are calling for immediate and sustainable actions to reduce pollution levels. For now, educational institutions across Punjab will remain closed, prioritizing the health and safety of students amid the environmental emergency.
